My Experiences with HTML Coding
Description of the Project
This week, I was instructed to design a webpage only using HTML. While going through the lesson, I learned how to code for headings, paragraphs, images, email addresses, websites, and how to change the color on words or backgrounds.
I was provided courses to help guide my instruction on LinkedIn Learning and guided practice through the W3 Schools site. The goal is for my classmates and I to be able to understand the basics of coding and using HTML in case we're in a setting where we need to know how to use it.
What Obstacles I Encountered
While creating my webpage through HTML, I encountered some obstacles. The first issue I faced was the fact that I have a limited knowledge of using HTML. Although I own my own website and blog regularly, I rarely use the HTML features.
Another obstacle I dealt with was knowing what code to type and how much space to leave between lines. While creating my HTML webpage, I went line by line and section by section to make sure I didn't make a mistake. I realized that one thing that makes coding difficult is that fact that there are a lot of details involved and it's important to take my time and not rush.
How I Resolved These Obstacles
To overcome the obstacle of having limited knowledge of HTML and how to use it correctly, I took my time reading about it. I also watched videos and put into practice slowly what I was learning. When it came time to entering in the correct HTML codes in Notepad, I typed out every character slowly.
Then, I would go back and check to make sure I did it correctly. Once I had all of the code in, I copied the .html into my web browser to see if the webpage loaded the way I wanted it to. If there was a section that didn't look correctly, I went back and took out an unnecessary space or break.
What Successes I Experienced
I feel successful knowing I feel a bit more confident using HTML. Knowing how to create a heading, the body, and add an image while only using HTML will help set me up for success while I continue working on my blog and websites. I learned that although this is something that doesn't come easily to me, with a little practice and a lot of patience, I can do it.
It's also important to remind myself and my readers that as teachers, we want to be perfectionists. As with anything else that's difficult, it's alright if we don't understand what we're doing right away. But, just like we tell our students to not give up and to push through if something is difficult, the same can be applied for us as well.
